A FOREIGN guest will join with home-grown artists in the second of Circle Gallery's 2009 calendar of exhibitions.

Some of Valeriu Buev's unusual works were created in his homeland of Moldova, a small impoverished country that sits between Russia and Ukraine.

Buev posted them to Australia two months ago, before heading to Spain where he produced other works as artist-in-residence in December.

Some finishing touches have been made while he's been staying with friend and fellow artist Dianne Williams, of Sherwood, who invited Buev to exhibit with her, Tony Greaves and Joanna Hiezke.

With a unique style, using oil paints on cardboard, Buev has exhibited across Europe and in the United States of America but never before in Australia.

"I'm interested in finding out if there was any interest in my painting manner," the artist/ illustrator said.

It's been a personal mission for Williams, who paints pet portraits, to get Buev to Brisbane, after she bought some of his works overseas.

"I feel he has something very different and interesting for the Australian art-loving public," she said.

"Due to the impoverished state of the country (Moldova), artists like Valeriu find it extremely difficult to get recognition for their artwork, added to the exaggerated costs of the materials to produce his finished product."

The Synergy exhibition opens tomorrow at 6pm at Circle Gallery, upstairs 274 Montague Rd, West End. it continues January 17-22 from 10am-4pm daily.
